It's been a year since the last time i posted in this blog. I have neglected what i think is the most uplifting, relaxing & stress-free activity one can ever have - blogging. Blogging, just like journaling is one way of relieving yourself of the numerous humdrum of your daily living.
Today is December 25, 2007 - 1:38AM, our time in this part of the world. As always, Christmas in our world is something everybody looks forward to. It's a time of gift giving, partying, time for children enjoying their "Santa Claus" syndrome. Christmas this side of the globe is almost an over month-long celebration. If people from the United States celebrate their Thanksgiving Day with a big bang, our big bang is Christmas. If people from the United States mark the beginning of their Christmas Holiday rush after Black Friday (is it?), in our world, after the Halloween, the holiday rush begins. You can hear department stores, radio stations, public places playing Christmas songs. Houses & stores start displaying their Christmas lights & other Christmas-related displays.
I have had my share of that Santa Claus syndrome, too when i was a kid. But that was when i was a kid. I usually look forward to what Santa might give me for this year. I use to hang my socks in our bedroom window & wake up in the morning with my socks & with it my gift. Almost always, my parents make it a point that i get what i wish for every Christmas. As far as i can remember, i always would want a book for Christmas. Every year, my parents gave me all sorts of fairy tale books.
Sadly, i do not share their conviction of introducing this syndrome to my kids. I tell them that Santa Claus is a legend. That Santa Claus, as per legend, really give gifts only to good boys & girls. But as i have explained to them, even if Santa does not exist, they will always have to be good boys & girls. And for good boys & girls, reward is always in the offing regardless of the season.
For me, Christmas, is the same every year. At least that's what i have been experiencing since the time i reached the age of maturity. The rush, the food, the gift-giving, the expenses, the visits to relatives, reunions. All being done in such a short time - all squeezed in to fit the holiday spirit. It's sad to note that because people hurry up for the preparation, rushed for the shopping of gifts - people fail to realize the real essence of the Christmas celebration. For Christians, Christmas ought to be re-living, remembering, the greatest gift one has ever offered. Jesus Christ. Much that i may sound corny or too religious, there is really a Super Being, who offered & sacrificed a great deal for mankind.
I was just wondering - during his actual birth - there was not much of a hullabaloo, right? In fact, no one knew, except those that were chosen that the Son of God was born. I just wish that despite the rush, the gift giving & partying around us, we could pause & try to meditate, contemplate & ask ourselves, am i really worthy of the gift this great Super Being has given me? Am i suppose to enjoy & be happy when i know that a few years from now this very same being will die on the cross for the sins of mankind? Is Christmas a "seasonal" celebration? Shouldn't be Christmas, at least the spirit, an everyday thing? As the song goes - give love on Christmas Day - why only on that day? Shouldn't it be - give love everyday?
Well, humans are humans. You are not human if you don't err. But - love as always encompasses all human flaws. Whether it's Christmas or just one of those days, if love is maintained - peace will be obtained. Because as the other song goes - love is the greatest of all.
